Mernda Park Primary in partnership with CERES is becoming an environmentally sustainable school. Our excursion was full of fantastic and engaging activities. The students had the opportunity to make recycled paper, meander along Merri Creek to observe the effects of pollution and learn about the role of worms in making compost.
Helen from Whittlesea Council Youth Services is working with Yan Yean Learning Community on an art project for Carome Homestead. The 5/6 students are creating new scarecrows and the 3/4 students are making artwork out of bottle tops to be displayed on the walls.
On Friday mornings the 3/4s in Yan Yean take part in the Raspberry Pi program. The students have been learning coding through Scratch. We have created different types of games using coding.
As part of our Integrated Studies unit students have been learning about fair tests and variables as they conduct simple experiments. Our experiment was to see if an orange would sink or float. We created hypothesises before conducting the experiment. The results were in. An orange will float with the skin on, however when peeled it will sink. The students conducted the experiment again, this time peeling one eighth of the orange skin at a time to see how much orange skin is required for the orange to float.
We spent two weeks learning about the significance of Anzac Day. We read and shared historical accounts, constructing paper poppies and making Anzac biscuits.
Yan Yean are reading to and running activities with our Prep community. We love to see students teaching students.
Netball is a game where you throw a ball to other players and some shoot it in the goal ring. There are C, WD, WA, GK, GD, GS and GA. The position that I liked best about netball is goal defence. Netball doesn't last long.
Last week we learned how to throw the ball, there are lots of passes like chest pass and shoulder pass it was fun! I liked it when I played goal defence, goal attack and goal shooter. Thank you Briony for teaching us how to play netball!
