Writer's Festival

The Present By Chace P

27/8/2019

BAM as I wake up from my sleep I can't hear anything as normal. I walk over to my iPad to use it. I decide to play Clash of Clans, I guess it is going to be another boring day at home.

I wake up the next day, I suddenly remember what day it is. I rush down the stairs as fast as light. I stop suddenly at the bottom, my family are all hiding. I stop in silence wondering why there is no one here. Excitedly my family jump and yell, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” It is the best day of my life. It is night time now and before I go to bed my mum whispers to me “There is one more surprise tomorrow.”

The next day when I wake up I think silently about what my mum said  last night. I see a light turn on and my door handle turns. Bam my door is open as wide as possible, my mum signs to me to get dressed and then get into the car. As we drive there are so many questions in my head I ask my mum what we are doing? She insists that it is a surprise. Finally we arrive at the hospital mum, signs to me that today is the day we get hearing aids for me.

Scared, excited, I wait. The doctor calls us into his office. He brings out the hearing aids and slowly fits them in my ear. I can’t hear anything for a little bit, then suddenly I hear my mum’s voice for the very first time. It is so loud but amazing. As we leave the hospital and I step out onto the street I can hear so many sounds, I ask my mum what every sound is cars, birds, people, dogs. She smiles as she names each one.

My life is so different now, I finally hear my alarm to wake me up, I can hear my brother’s voice. I still use sign language sometimes, but life is so much easier, I  hear so many new sounds each and every day. At dinner my family surprise me by singing ‘Happy Birthday.’ It sounds wonderful. I feel so happy.

I can still remember the very first sounds I ever heard. My mum’s voice, birds singing, cars honking.
