Writer's Festival

The Present By Hersh P

27/8/2019

TIC TOC! TIC TOC! Ignore it! It’s just too boring listening to that clock.Time goes by, and then mum comes. That’s my typical day. “HUH” I sigh. DING DONG DING DONG! What the? How can some person come so early. I slowly rise, pick up my crutches and approach the door and I open it...HUH? What?

It’s my dad coming home at midday, that never happens! Dad always comes home at 6.00pm, no matter what! Since dad never comes at midday l have a million questions. Minutes later, I have probably asked every question I need to ask and now I guess I’m heading to the hospital. I wonder why? Dad usually tells me at the start of the day if plans have changed or if anything is going to happen but that didn’t happen today.

Here we are in hospital ready to get… I don’t know! Still no clues from dad. I ask dad again “Where and what are we here for?” He turns to me with a huge smile and says, “Your mechanical leg and it is finally ready!’’ I BURST with excitement. The doctor finally comes and gives me my mechanical leg. It feels like a big, shiny, piece of metal, that has come from outer space. Now I can start to think about 50 sports I can play again! My dream has begun.

Slowly, carefully my doctor attaches my mechanical leg to me. As I nervously walk forward and forward, my heart starts racing and pumping but it’s fine. Each second I move faster and faster. I’m starting to create more balance. 1 hour later as the city lights break silence I’m heading back to my house, I’m as happy and joyful as a doctor who has just saved his patient.

All at once I think about the stuff I can do now and I think I can probably do everything. Happiness erupts through my body. I just realise it’s summer now, so l can play sport again! My dreams are happening, now l can tick playing sports off my list after many years.

And who knows? This could change my whole life.
