Writer's Festival

The Present By Savannah M

27/8/2019

ZZZZZZZZZZ I am asleep in my bedroom, in the dark. It’s so boring in my home you wouldn’t ever want to come over. There isn’t really anything for me to do. That’s why I am always sleeping. I think to myself, go outside and play, but I can't do that. There is so much I can’t do. I wish my life was different.

Dad calls me to come down and see something. I really do not want to go. What can I see anyway? Nothing!! I slowly, carefully, cautiously walk down the steps to my dad. I hear voices, one is my dad’s but I have never heard the other voice. Who could it be? What do they want from me? Dad asks me to walk towards his voice. I'm nervous! I ask who is with him? “I have something special for you,” he replies. “Come forward and put your hands out,” encourages Dad.

Nervously I walk forward, I feel furry ears and a wet nose. I hear a soft, gentle bark. YUCK!! It licks me. A big wet, slimy lick. I then realise it's a dog, I scream with excitement!  “To have a guide dog is very special,” said the other voice. Dad explains that Rachel has been training the dog just for me. I am overwhelmed with emotions, I am so happy!

It’s awesome having my very own guide dog, I name her Daisy and Daisy comes everywhere with me, she is my best friend. She comes to the park, to the shops and even to school. Daisy wears a very special jacket to let people know that she is working. Daisy has changed my life.

Now that I have Daisy in my life it means that I don’t spend my days in my bedroom alone. I can now go outside and play and have adventures. In the future I want to be the person that trains guide dogs for other children that are sight impaired. My life is a gift.

Who would believe that a ball of fur would make me so happy?
