Term 4 Progress in Japanese

28/11/2022

PLC students discovered a Japanese folk tale called Momotaro: The Peach Boy. Students were exposed to the story of Momotaro and how to write and say names of each character. After a few lessons students were able to re-tell the story using some Japanese key words. At the end of the unit, students played the role of the story characters and were able to introduce the characters' names in Japanese. As a culture and craft activity, students created the Momotaro headband as shown in one of the pictures. In Japan, this type of headband is worn on multiple occasions as it generally represents perseverance, courage and effort.

SLC students
learned about Days of the Week with the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar in Japanese. Students learned a Days of the Week song in Japanese, and sang the song at the start of every lesson as a warm up. Students learnt the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar in Japanese by watching the story video. Students were able to identify some key words in Japanese while watching. As the end of the topic activity, students created an Origami mini book. In the mini book, students wrote 7 Days of the Week in Japanese and the iconic scenes from The Very Hungry Caterpillar. It was great to see some excellent Japanese writing and creative work during the mini book making sessions.

CLC students
explored one of the Japanese phonetic lettering systems called Hiragana. Students have almost learnt all of the 46 Hiragana characters along with memory clues. Each lesson students learn 5 Hiragana characters and practice their recognition, reading and writing skills.  Students had a different variety of activities each week to enhance these skills including Matching cards, Play Dough Activity, Bingo and more.
Apart from learning our main topic: Hiragana Character, students have been practicing to sing Jingle Bells in Japanese. CLC students have been showing great dedication to learning the song and have built their confidence of singing in Japanese. This will be performed at the School Concert on Wednesday, 7 December.

YYLC students
have learnt how to use the two sentence patterns to say there is/are in Japanese. Firstly, students start this topic by understanding the meaning of Animate things and Inanimate things. Then students learned two sentence structures along with 5 animal words and 6 stationery words. Students practiced using them by working on some writing, reading, and listening activities. Grade 4 and 5 students made a video of themselves saying these sentences. In Week 9, students made some Origami Christmas Ornaments to decorate the school.
Grade 4 students made Love Hearts. Grade 5 students made Christmas Trees. Grade 6 students made Ninja Stars.

PLC students have been building on their vocabulary in  body parts and colours. In Japanese, it has been a routine to greet, respond to the role, review the words they have learnt in the past, and sing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.
Prep students are becoming experts of following this routine in Japanese language. It has been amazing to see a lot of students being enthusiastic and confident.
Prep students are excited to perform Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in Japanese at assembly on Monday 12th September.

SLC students have been exploring the topic of Healthy Food. Students are practicing to say, write, read and listen to the 6 healthy food names. We created the hand signs together which help them remember the words. These photos were taken when students played Connect 4. The aim of this activity was to build confidence to read and say the words in Japanese while playing the game.

CLC students have worked on a variety of activities to be able to say, write, read and listen to the 6 family member words. In the last couple of lessons, students extended their knowledge of self-introduction to introduce their family members. These photos show some amazing writing work about their family members.

YYLC students have been developing their language skills of composing sentences in Japanese. Students have learned the 6 family member words and 8 describing words in this Term. To memorise these words, students have done different types of activities including the basic writing and reading tasks and playing the Japanese traditional card game called Karuta.
Our aim is to be able to make sentences to describe family members by the end of the Term.

It has been great to see students back to school.

Term 2 Student work - PLC & SLC

20/6/2022

Picture
PLC students have been practicing "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" in Japanese. They remembered the actions and lyrics in Japanese very well. In Term 3, students will continue practicing the song at the start of each lesson to master the actions and singing in Japanese.
The video on the left side shows our singing practice in class.

SLC students have learnt counting 1-10 in Japanese. SLC students used Romaji to write 1-10 in Japanese. Romaji is the translation of Japanese writing in to Roman characters. Romaji is used when people do not know the full sets of the Japanese writing system. Students practiced counting and writing 1-10 by working on a variety of activities as shown on the left side.

Term 2 Learning Topics

Japanese Children's Day is held on 5th of May every year.
SLC students have learnt about Children's Day and Koi Fish Flag.
The Koi is used as an icon for Children's Day.
Because Koi is a fish that swims upstream, and can leap out of the water over small obstacles.
So the Koi Fish Flag represents parent's hope for their children to grow strong
and in good health just like Koi Fish.

Students have been making great achievements in Japanese class.
I am very proud of them and would like to share what they have accomplished.

PLC students have made great progress of getting used to the class routine and good at greetings in Japanese. At the beginning and end of Japanese class, students say "Konnichiwa (Hello)" and "Sayonara (Goodbye)." This week students have learned how to say Japan and draw the Japanese flag. It has been amazing to see their progress in every aspect, including getting used to the classroom routines and Japanese learning.

SLC students have learnt about Japanese New Years and Japanese Zodiac Animals in the first few weeks of this Term. Our new topic from this week is Zoo Animals. Students learnt how to say 4 animal names in Japanese with body actions. In the following lessons, students will work on a variety of language skills including letter recognitions, writing, reading, speaking and listening.

CLC students have also learnt about Japanese New Years and Japanese Zodiac Animals in the first few weeks of this Term. Our new topic is Self-introduction. Students were excited to learn how to write their names in Japanese, and say "My name is ....." in Japanese. Students will continue learning more self-introduction phrases in the following lessons.

In the last 3 weeks, YYLC students have been learning the 3 basic self-introductions: Greeting, Name, and Grade 4, 5 and 6. This week, students tried the listening activity to check their listening skills and understanding of the 3 self-introduction sentences. The video below shows students' amazing speaking practice, and the Role Play.
