At the start of Term 1, all students at Mernda Park Primary learnt about Japanese New Year. Students explored how people celebrate new years following traditional Japanese cultures. They also learnt that 2021 is the year of the ox/ cow and then explored Japanese Zodiac Signs. Students identified what their Japanese zodiac signs are as well as their family's. Simon LCThe Second topic SLC students learnt in Term 1 was colour. Students learnt four colours in Japanese and practiced their speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills in the lessons. We also started learning a song called "If you're happy and you know it" in Japanese. Students have been enjoying participating in singing and we will continue practicing this song in the next term. Carome LCThe second topic CLC students learnt in Term 1 was Children’s Day celebration in Japan. Students explored what Children’s Day is for and how people in Japan celebrate. In this week’s lesson, students had an opportunity to create a Koi fish kite which is used to wish children a strong and healthy life. Yan Yean LCYYLC students focused on investigating the topic: Japanese New Year for the whole term. First, students created a Japanese New Year card called Nengajyo writing Happy New Year in Japanese and using the picture of a cow which is the king of the animal for this year. Then students learnt how to say the 12 zodiac animals in Japanese. In the second half of the term, students focused on exploring traditional ways of celebrating new year in Japan. At the end of the term, students demonstrated their knowledge by creating a group poster.

During Term 4 onsite learning, students have managed to demonstrate some Japanese knowledge they learnt during Term 3 remote learning. Below briefly shows what each LC studied during Term 4. They practiced reading, writing and speaking Zoo Animal words in Japanese. They are good at counting zoo animals using the prior knowledge of counting 1-10 in Japanese that was taught during remote learning. Yan Yean LCStudents from Yan Yean Learning Community started the term by thinking of Gratitude. They made Sakura (cherry blossom) flower filled with gratitude words in Japanese. Here is a photo of the Gratitude Sakura Tree in YYLC.
During Term 4, student focused on learning how to express what they like, love and dislike in Speaking, Writing and Reading. In order to talk about what they like, love and dislike, they practiced using the sentence patterns first and then learnt some vocabularies such as food they like, animals they love, and things they don't like. Students from Simon, Carome and Yan Yean LC's have learnt Japanese remotely during Term 3.
In Japanese class, students were to watch instructional videos online and complete activities including singing, drawing, making Origami, playing Kahoot and watching videos of Japanese folktale etc. Students from Simon Learning Community have learnt how to count number 1 to 5 in Japanese. They also have started learning a Japanese Christmas song for the last couple of weeks. We are aiming to be ready to sing the song well by the end of Term 4. Stay tuned! Students from Carome Learning Community have learnt the topic: Japanese winter. They have explored the topic by comparing the difference between Japanese and Australian winter and learning how Japanese animals live in the cold weather. Students were also exposed to Japanese cultures by learning Japanese winter folktales, Japanese winter events and sports. Students from Yan Yean Learning Community have learnt the topic of nature. First, students learnt how to say some nature words and then learnt how to use these words in a sentence. Students also learnt some Japanese nature facts. This message from Mio, our Japanese teacher, provides families with a recipe that might be fun to try in isolation.
