SLC’s MAPPEN looked at the topic ‘Community’ in Term 1. We looked at bringing communities together and making connections with the greater community. SLC performed their special dances to YYLC. The SLC students also got to read and share books with YYLC students. All the students thoroughly enjoyed sharing this wonderful experience together. We explored length as part of the SLC Term 1 Maths unit. Students decorated and folded paper planes and then stood at a starting point before throwing their planes outside. Students used informal uniform units of paces to estimate and measure the distance that the planes travelled. We discussed how our results differed depending on the individual paces. Students estimated and measured the length of different ‘bunny trails’ around SLC with their Maths buddies. Students chose the best fit tool such as: icypole sticks for longer tails and paper clips for shorter bunny trails.LLLL helps children build a strong foundation in reading by systematically teaching key concepts like phonics (the relationship between sounds and letters), phonemic awareness (the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in spoken words), comprehension and high-frequency words. The Little Learners Love Literacy program utilises a staged approach to learning, meaning students’ progress through specific developmental stages rather than using levelled texts. Through differentiated and interactive games and activities, students learn to decode words, improve their reading fluency, develop spelling and handwriting skills and foster a love for reading. SLC are working in Stage 1 to 7 groups working with students at their like abilities in reading and phonics. The children are very engaged in different activities with 5 lessons a week. Children take part in lessons that can be Let’s Spell, Where’s the Sound, Let’s Write, handwriting, guided reading, phonic games, Read and Grab and many more… Children also have access to their reading books online on the LLLL website where teachers allocate books for the children to share with their families at home. To enhance learning of this term's topic of 'Light and Sound', we visited Scienceworks where students participated in a variety of science based activities. As the school bus rolled up to Scienceworks, excitement was palpable. The students, bubbling with energy, could barely contain their anticipation. Their day was packed with interactive exhibits, captivating displays, and the promise of hands-on learning experiences.
Teusday, the 20th of August was absolutely magical at our school as we celebrated Book Week with a super fun parade! Our Grade 1 and 2 students turned into their favourite book characters, and it was a sight to behold! Imagine walking into the school and seeing a sea of colourful costumes and happy faces. We had cowgirls, superheroes, magical people, and even a few friendly video game characters! Each student proudly showed off their costume and shared stories about their chosen character. It was like stepping into a real-life storybook! To celebrate the occasion, students held a book week parade assembly to show off their amazing costumes! For our first week back, we have been able to celebrate NAIDOC week in SLC that was celebrated around Australia from the 7th July to 14th July. NAIDOC week is a time to celebrate the histories, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. |
