Support Services for RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS

The Royal Commission into Family Violence identified the critical role that schools and early childhood education have in creating a culture of respect to change the story of family violence for future generations.
In 2016, respectful relationships education became a core component of the Victorian Curriculum from foundation to year 12, and is being taught in all government and Catholic schools and many independent schools.
Everyone in our community deserves to be respected, valued and treated equally. We know that changes in attitudes and behaviours can be achieved when positive attitudes, behaviours and equality are embedded in our education settings.
Respectful Relationships is about embedding a culture of respect and equality across our entire community, from our classrooms to staffrooms, sporting fields, fetes and social events. This approach leads to positive impacts on student’s academic outcomes, their mental health, classroom behaviour, and relationships between teachers and students.
Together, we can lead the way in saying yes to respect and equality, and creating genuine and lasting change so that every child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

The Brotherhood of St. Laurence’s mission is to work for an Australia free of Poverty. Given the cost-of-living challenges at the moment, many families are doing it very tough. 

Brotherhood of St Laurence offer a list of financial resources available to eligible families:​

Koorie Engagement Support Officers
​Victoria as the Education State – delivering excellence in outcomes and services for every child and every learner. 

The Education State is about giving every Victorian the opportunity to succeed in life, regardless of background, place or circumstance.
 
Marrung Aboriginal Education Plan 2016 - 2026 is a 10-year plan and underpins the delivery of the Education State to Koorie learners by ensuring opportunities exist to secure the full benefits of Education State reforms for Koorie Victorians. It requires all services to embed Koorie aspirations and outcomes as core business, including early childhood services, schools and training providers.
 
The role of the KESOs is to help build the capacity of Victorian schools and early learning services to provide culturally welcoming and safe learning environments where Koorie students can participate fully, achieve their best, and graduate to post-secondary education and training pathways.
KESOs bring skills and knowledge in culture and community, and specialist understanding of the specific barriers to education that can face Koorie students.

​​Previously KESOs worked within a 20-week placement in schools and supported the facilitation and engagement between school, families, students, key stakeholders and organisations, building and or strengthening the relationships between them.
 
In 2018, the KESOs began working more closely with Senior Education Improvement Leaders (SEILs) to implement and deliver the Regional Marrung Implementation Plan.
This includes delivery of Cultural Understanding and Safety Training to all schools.
 
The KESOs will also be available to guide and support schools to develop Individual Education Plans (IEP) for all Koorie Students.
 
Other priority areas for the KESOs include:
  • Cultural audits of all schools and early learning centres within their networks
  • Supporting services and families to access 3 and 4 year old kinder programs and promoting all DET Early years initiatives
  • Support supported playgroups
  • Engage with Maternal Child Health coordinators
  • Attend student support group meetings for Koorie Out of Home Care students as per LOOKOUT Centres processes
  • Promote opportunities for families to engage in relevant committees, councils and groups.

Well-being / Sleep Health

While we know sleep is essential for good health, research shows that many children and young people are not getting enough sleep on school nights. This can affect thinking, concentration, memory, reaction times and mood.
Research shows about 12% of primary school-aged children, a quarter of 12- to 15-year-olds and half of 16- to 17-year-olds don’t get enough sleep on school nights. The recommended amount of time to sleep for primary school-aged children is 9 to 11 hours. For teenagers, it’s 8 to 10 hours.

Signs that your child is not getting enough sleep can include:

  • low mood and irritability during social interactions
  • reluctance or arguing about getting off devices and going to bed
  • falling asleep during the day
  • difficulties waking up for school and sleeping in late on weekends to catch up
  • changes to communicating or interacting at home.
You can help your child to improve their sleep by:
  • establishing a regular sleep pattern and consistent bedtime routine
  • supporting them to avoid using electronic devices such as smartphones before going to bed and in bed
  • encouraging your child to exercise and spend time outside in daylight, steering clear of vigorous activity in the hour before sleep
  • encouraging them to wind down and relax before going to bed.

If your child is still having trouble sleeping, has persistent problems with low mood, excessive daytime sleepiness, restlessness in bed, severe snoring or wakening unrefreshed, despite getting adequate length sleep, they should see a doctor.

E-SAFETY ONLINE - SAFETY INFORMATION & GUIDANCE FOR PARENTS

At MPPS as well as accessing the eSafety resources for school, we encourage parents/carers to access the eSafety Parents link to utilise the resources available, to help our students navigate their digital world and educate them to avoid harmful online experiences outside of school.

The eSafety website encourages parents/carers to work together with young people to understand the importance of engaging with their online activity safely such as –
  • setting boundaries around their usage time
  • knowing the apps and games being accessed
  • being aware of the online content and communication with others
  • monitoring the environment being used by the child
  • how to report unsafe online usage to the eSafety Commissioner

The eSafety Website provides education and tips for families with the aim of keeping children safe and supporting them to have a positive experience when online.
