TERM 4 PHYSICAL EDUCATION OVERVIEW
To begin Term 4, all year levels will complete the Athletic Skills Track, an obstacle course assessment first introduced in Term 2. This course measures students’ speed, agility, balance, and coordination as they navigate a series of challenges. Students will compare their new times to their Term 2 results and set personal goals to improve their performance. In addition, all students will complete a throwing assessment, focusing on both underarm and overarm techniques. They will be assessed on their ability to use correct technique, control their movements, and accurately aim for a target.
PLC (Prep)
After the initial assessments, Prep students will focus on the fundamental movement skill of Striking. In the Victorian Curriculum, striking is defined as using a body part or an implement to apply force to an object in order to propel it. Students will begin by using their dominant hand to strike a ball and will then progress to a range of paddles, bats, and racquets with different sized balls and balloons. These activities will also support students in developing their hand-eye coordination, control, and confidence when engaging with equipment.
SLC (Grade 1/2)
After the assessments, Grade 1/2 students will be learning a variety of Striking and Fielding Games. They will begin by exploring the layout of a diamond, which is commonly used in many of these games. Students will break down the key skills required to be successful, including working as a team to field—understanding that it takes more than one person to cover the field effectively—and developing their striking skills with a focus on both power and accuracy. Once confident with these fundamental skills, students will apply them in a range of games such as Tee Ball, Tennis Baseball, Skittle Tee Ball, and Kick Ball.
CLC (Grade 3/4)
After the assessments, Grade 3/4 students will begin learning the invasion game Rugby League. They will develop key skills such as passing, catching, evading defenders, and supporting their teammates to move the ball towards the scoring area. Lessons will focus on teamwork, communication, and learning how to make good decisions in fast-moving game situations. Students will also explore the importance of rules and penalties—understanding that breaking rules or showing poor sportsmanship has consequences. This helps students learn to play fairly, respect others, and contribute positively to their team.
YYLC (Grade 5/6)
After the assessments, Grade 5/6 students will focus on the invasion game Rugby League. They will build on their skills in passing, catching, dodging defenders, and creating space, while also learning more advanced strategies to attack and defend as a team. Students will be challenged to work together, think tactically, and apply their skills in modified game situations. A strong focus will also be placed on understanding penalties and sportsmanship—recognising that breaking the rules or showing unsporting behaviour not only impacts themselves but also their team. This encourages students to take responsibility for their actions on the sporting field.
