This term, students have launched into an exciting new Maths Fluency Activity designed to boost their mental calculation skills — helping them solve problems faster and more accurately than ever before.
Each lesson, students will spend just five focused minutes on quick-fire maths questions, developing not only speed but also deeper number sense and confidence. It’s a fast-paced, energising start to their maths learning — and a fantastic way to multiply their success! We can't wait to watch their skills add up over the coming term as they master the art of mental maths! Students have been writing an Easter themed, procedural text with a narrative twist! There were many interesting and funny instructions written on How to Catch an Easter Bunny and How to Save Easter!
After drafting their writing piece, students went on to publish a picture book with illustrations, a beautiful front cover and handwritten text. They then read their book to the SLC students! Well done to our YYLC authors and illustrators!!! We hope families enjoy these stories too! YYLC enjoyed hands-on maths activities in the sun today.
Students made paper airplanes, threw them across the playground and measured the distance the plane flew using trundle wheels and measuring tapes. Students then converted the distance to a variety of units of measurements. In weeks 7 and 8 students in YYLC have been working hard, learning about, and researching Indigenous change makers. A change maker is someone who helped shape our country and create positive change. The YYLC students collaboratively researched Indigenous Change Makers, then created an information poster showcasing what they have learnt. Students used Canva, Google Slides or paper to publish their writing pieces. YYLC students did an incredible job researching, note taking and publishing their findings!
As part of our Start- Up Program students completed a Descriptive poem which focused on their identity. Students first completed an All About Me shoe- which they used to showcase all the things that are important to them. They then chose a base word for their Acrostic poem and created a descriptive poem to match incorporating writing strategies and rhyme. Students published their poem and displayed it on coloured paper with their All About Me Shoe which are now displayed in the Yan Yean Central Pod- we are so proud of their work!
Exciting learning with Cricket Maths
Earlier in the term students completed a fun and engaging math's activity. During this lesson students combined the excitement of cricket with important math skills to enhance their understanding of place value, addition, and subtraction. As part of the activity, students “played” a cricket match, calculating runs, overs, and wickets. This not only helped student sharpen their mathematical abilities, but also made learning feel dynamic and enjoyable. Students enjoyed participating in this lesson and sharing the strategies they used to maximise their runs! On the 15th of November, students from Grades 3-6 gathered for an exciting and action-packed School House Colours Athletics Day. The event, which was held on the school sports field, featured a variety of fun and competitive activities designed to showcase the athletic talents of students across different houses. The day was filled with friendly competition, school spirit, and plenty of excitement, as students participated in events ranging from some traditional races like hurdles, to unique games such as sack races and egg and spoon races.
Last week the students in Yan Yean were fortunate enough to watch 2 performances. The first was The Lakes production of "Curtain Call," and it was a fantastic experience. The venue was buzzing with anticipation as we waited to see what the students from grades Prep to Year 10 were going to perform. |
