Mastering Maths Fluency

29/4/2025

This term, students have launched into an exciting new Maths Fluency Activity designed to boost their mental calculation skills — helping them solve problems faster and more accurately than ever before.

Each lesson, students will spend just five focused minutes on quick-fire maths questions, developing not only speed but also deeper number sense and confidence. It’s a fast-paced, energising start to their maths learning — and a fantastic way to multiply their success!
We can't wait to watch their skills add up over the coming term as they master the art of mental maths!

Reading with SLC

3/4/2025

Students have been writing an Easter themed, procedural text with a narrative twist! There were many interesting and funny instructions written on How to Catch an Easter Bunny and How to Save Easter!
After drafting their writing piece, students went on to publish a picture book with illustrations, a beautiful front cover and handwritten text.
They then read their book to the SLC students!
Well done to our YYLC authors and illustrators!!! We hope families enjoy these stories too!

Maths Fun in YYLC

3/4/2025

YYLC enjoyed hands-on maths activities in the sun today.
Students made paper airplanes, threw them across the playground and measured the distance the plane flew using trundle wheels and measuring tapes.
Students then converted the distance to a variety of units of measurements.

Informative writing: Indigenous Change makers

19/3/2025

In weeks 7 and 8 students in YYLC have been working hard, learning about, and researching Indigenous change makers. A change maker is someone who helped shape our country and create positive change. The YYLC students collaboratively researched Indigenous Change Makers, then created an information poster showcasing what they have learnt. Students used Canva, Google Slides or paper to publish their writing pieces. YYLC students did an incredible job researching, note taking and publishing their findings!

February 09th, 2025

9/2/2025

As part of our Start- Up Program students completed a Descriptive poem which focused on their identity. Students first completed an All About Me shoe- which they used to showcase all the things that are important to them. They then chose a base word for their Acrostic poem and created a descriptive poem to match incorporating writing strategies and rhyme. Students published their poem and displayed it on coloured paper with their All About Me Shoe which are now displayed in the Yan Yean Central Pod- we are so proud of their work!

CRICKET maths

3/2/2025

Exciting learning with Cricket Maths

Earlier in the term students completed a fun and engaging math's activity. During this lesson students combined the excitement of cricket with important math skills to enhance their understanding of place value, addition, and subtraction.
As part of the activity, students “played” a cricket match, calculating runs, overs, and wickets. This not only helped student sharpen their mathematical abilities, but also made learning feel dynamic and enjoyable. Students enjoyed participating in this lesson and sharing the strategies they used to maximise their runs!

Athletics Day

19/11/2024

On the 15th of November, students from Grades 3-6 gathered for an exciting and action-packed School House Colours Athletics Day. The event, which was held on the school sports field, featured a variety of fun and competitive activities designed to showcase the athletic talents of students across different houses. The day was filled with friendly competition, school spirit, and plenty of excitement, as students participated in events ranging from some traditional races like hurdles, to unique games such as sack races and egg and spoon races.

Athletics Day 2024 was a huge success, filled with moments of triumph, laughter, and camaraderie. It was a fantastic display of school spirit, with each house competing fiercely but in the true spirit of friendly rivalry. Mills House (Green) can be proud of their well-earned victory for 3-6's, but all participants are to be congratulated for their enthusiasm and effort. The teachers' race provided an entertaining finale to a day full of fun, and it was a great reminder of the positive and supportive school community we have.

Congratulations to all participants, and a special thanks to the event organisers and volunteers who made the day run smoothly. We look forward to next year’s Athletics Day!

Performances

23/10/2024

Last week the students in Yan Yean were fortunate enough to watch 2 performances. The first was The Lakes production of "Curtain Call," and it was a fantastic experience. The venue was buzzing with anticipation as we waited to see what the students from grades Prep to Year 10 were going to perform.
The cast delivered powerful performances, but the standout was the Wakakirri performance which was beautifully choreographed.
At the end of the performance, our students had the opportunity to learn how to do the ‘Hand Jive’ and ‘The Time Warp’.

The second performance that we watched was by Alpha Shows, and was inspired by the beloved movie "Frozen." This production explored the profound theme of how our perceptions—both negative and positive—shape our thoughts and emotions, ultimately influencing our ability to align with our true potential.
From the moment the show began, it was clear that the performers were committed to bringing this message to life. The staging was vibrant and dynamic, mirroring the icy landscapes and magical elements of "Frozen," while infusing it with a fresh perspective on personal growth and self-discovery. The storyline unfolded seamlessly, blending humour and drama which engaged the students.

Science Experiments

27/8/2024

In the Yan Yean Learning Community, science has truly come to life as students engage in a variety of exciting experiments. We've been diving deep into the fascinating worlds of absorption, surface tension, and circuits, uncovering the wonders of how everyday materials interact. Our exploration of volcanoes brought fiery eruptions to the classroom, while our investigations into water revealed its incredible properties, from surface tension to the density of ice. The fun didn't stop there—students got hands-on with Oobleck, marveling at its unique ability to act like both a liquid and a solid. We even delved into the mysteries of invisible ink, using lemon juice to create secret messages that magically appear with heat. These experiments have sparked curiosity, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the science that surrounds us every day.

book week

19/8/2024

It was absolutely fantastic to see so many students dressed up in all different costumes for Book Week! The school was transformed into a vibrant celebration of literature, with characters from all sorts of stories coming to life right before our eyes. From classic heroes to modern-day favorites, the creativity and enthusiasm were truly inspiring. It was clear that each family put so much thought and effort into their costumes, making the day a wonderful tribute to the magic of books. The excitement and joy on everyone's faces made this Book Week one to remember!
