In the Yan Yean Learning Community, science has truly come to life as students engage in a variety of exciting experiments. We've been diving deep into the fascinating worlds of absorption, surface tension, and circuits, uncovering the wonders of how everyday materials interact. Our exploration of volcanoes brought fiery eruptions to the classroom, while our investigations into water revealed its incredible properties, from surface tension to the density of ice. The fun didn't stop there—students got hands-on with Oobleck, marveling at its unique ability to act like both a liquid and a solid. We even delved into the mysteries of invisible ink, using lemon juice to create secret messages that magically appear with heat. These experiments have sparked curiosity, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the science that surrounds us every day.
It was absolutely fantastic to see so many students dressed up in all different costumes for Book Week! The school was transformed into a vibrant celebration of literature, with characters from all sorts of stories coming to life right before our eyes. From classic heroes to modern-day favorites, the creativity and enthusiasm were truly inspiring. It was clear that each family put so much thought and effort into their costumes, making the day a wonderful tribute to the magic of books. The excitement and joy on everyone's faces made this Book Week one to remember! Our Writers' Festival focus was on Mythical Beasts and Magical Creatures, we drew inspiration from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe as a foundation for our writing. Please have a look!

This is a tradition the Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islander Peoples use. 'From the 26th to the 28th of June the grade 5 and 6 students embarked on an adventure to Camp Manyung. It was a very fun and thrilling experience for us. WE participated in many fun activities such as the Giant Swing, the Flying Fox, the Leadership Challenge, Marine Discovery and more. I think everyone that came to the camp would agree that the food there was divine and the dessert was even better. Now we would like to show you a short video of our amazing adventure. Enjoy.' - Emily Simcox As part of our weekly Respectful Relationships lessons we learn to build social skills including developing our personal strengths, communication skills and interpersonal skills. A great example of this is playing games! Here are photos of students playing engaging, fun board games!Thank you to all the families and students who participated in Crazy Hair Day 2024. Not only did we raise money through gold coin donations, we had a lot of fun showing off our crazy hairstyles! See the Year 5 and Year 6 photos!
YYLC students have been learning all about 3D shapes, cross sections and nets. Last week students made 3D shapes from playdoh then cut them to see which 2D shape cross section could be seen. They also played a visualisation game "3 lies and 1 truth" to understand which nets matched to the 3D cube.
Students have been very busy researching a significant Australian event. After developing their own questions about the event, students used the internet and books to find facts and details. They then designed and created a poster and diorama, which will be used when presenting to peers in our very own class museum. See the photos of the fabulous creations!
A huge congratulations to all of our cross country participants! Many of our Year 5/6 students travelled to Kilmore Race Track to compete against other students in our district on Tuesday 14th May. The weather was unexpectedly sunny making it a great day to cheer on all our team mates. Although the track was very tough and very long, all students gave 100% with quite a few qualifying for the next level of competition. Well done to everyone involved!
