Holidays are near and to celebrate we have been getting festive in SLC! Some fun activities students have been involved in include Christmas cards, Rudolf cutouts, Christmas cookies, paper chains, Santa stuck in the chimney and baubles. Students are enjoying being creative and getting into the holiday spirit! We wish all families a safe and happy holiday, we look forward to seeing you in the new year!In Week 9 and 10 students have been learning about prosthetic and bionic limbs! Students have learnt all new information including how prosthetic limbs initially started looking like a "Dolly Arm" and have progressed to bionic robotic limbs that allow people to complete everyday tasks. Learning about this topic not only links with our robotic unit but has built empathy within our students. Students collaborated with each other to write new information and create an informative poster! The Elf on the Shelf has arrived back in SLC and all students have been extremely excited. The Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas tradition, the story goes that Santa’s Scout Elves fly to the North Pole each night of December to report to Santa if children have been behaving (or misbehaving). The elves then fly back and hide in a new spot for the children to find them the next morning. Typically, Scout Elves love to hide in sneaky spots and sometimes they like to stir up mischief the night before. All students have been excited to find the Elf every morning and look forward to where it hides next! This term in SLC students have been learning about robots in our integrated unit. Students have considered ways to be creative, learnt new vocabulary, analysed objects, made new designs, investigated 3D shapes, and designed a robot of their own. Students have learnt about the properties of different materials and considered which materials they should use to build their robot. Students worked to design and build a robot using craft materials and created some amazing robots! Thanks again to all the families who provided us with the resources that were used to create all the robots. On Tuesday in SLC we had a science day focus which involved some fun experiments and the LEGO Technic Incursion. Students rotated through all activities which included an oobleck experiment, volcano experiment, magnetic investigation, the phases of the moon and the Lego Technic Incursion. Students enjoyed the hands-on activities and exploration as well as the engaging incursion.During week 2 and week 3 some SLC students participated in a writing workshop ran by Ann Angelopoulos. At MPPS we use Ann's writing model to teach all writing sessions. All students who participated in the workshop were highly engaged and produced an amazing writing piece that they then typed up. Students wrote a persuasive piece of writing to convince the reader that we should play every day! Please have a read of some of the wonderful storytellers we have in SLC!In Term 4, SLC are focusing on computers and technology for our oral language experience. Students will be rotating through six different activities over the next six weeks. The activities include programming Bee-bots, using QR codes to access online websites and games, logging into computers and google classroom, programming robots to draw, using scratch to create a story and logging in and out of online programs such as reading eggs. Students have been highly engaged and we look forward to continuing our rotations over the term.In SLC students have been learning about fractions. All students participated in our fairy bread mathematics activity where they got to make fairy bread and cut it into two or four parts and described how the parts were equal. Students identified equal and unequal parts and were able to explain if sharing their fairy bread would be fair. At the end of the lesson students got to eat and enjoy their fairy bread as their snack. This term in SLC we have been learning all about celebrating our differences. In writing we shared family recipes to celebrate the different foods we enjoy. Students in SLC wrote a procedural text about a special family recipe and included writing strategies in their writing such as alliteration, power of three, simple and compound sentences. We have created a recipe book from each group in SLC to embrace our diversity.
