New schools a class act

14/2/2017

Gyms and theatres all part of the plan

STUDENTS in Melbourne's north have started the 2017 school year in three brand-new schools.

Education Minister James Merlino visited Mernda Central P-12 College, Mernda Park Primary and Harvest Home Primary School to welcome staff and students as part of the official school openings.

"We are ... ensuring (students) have access to the education they need in the state-of-the-art facilities they deserve." Mr Merlino said.

The schools feature first-class sporting facilities, including competition-grade gyms, as well as performing arts theatres and kitchens.

They also have multipurpose spaces to be used by the YMCA outside of school hours to provide before and after-school care, as well as a range of community services and programs.

Mernda Park Primary School also has an Integrated Early Learning Centre on site to facilitate transition to primary school.

"The facilities will make a real difference to local community groups, especially sporting clubs looking for a home." Yan Yean state ALP MP Danielle Green said.

Harvest Home also provides state-of-the-art facilities for community groups and features a new spotts oval, outdoor amphitheatre and an expansive gym.

Thomastown state ALP MP Browyn Halfpenny said the new school would provide students, teachers and the community with access to improved facilities.
