In CLC, we celebrated Literacy and Numeracy week from August 29th until September 4th! It wasn't our average week – it was a celebration of the pleasure we find in reading and the wonders of math! Did you know this special week all started in Australia back in 1997? Since then, it's become a global phenomenon, inspiring young learners to discover the joy of these essential skills and concepts. We used Lego to embrace our learning during maths and used Post It notes to prank the teachers, while learning about Area. See the photos below to see our brain-boosting fun! Today we embarked on a magical transformation for our BOOK WEEK DRESS-UP PARADE! Families were invited to attend the dress-up parade in the Stadium. This year's theme is "Reading is Magic!", and with that, we saw many family's creativity unleashed and imaginations took flight when creating costumes. Whether it was a brave knight, a mischievous fairy, or a world-traveling explorer, our students brought their favourite story to life! This term, students in Carome Learning Community have been learning about online safety with the help of Hector and his friends from Hector's World. Hector's World is a multimodal text endorsed by Esafety, Australia's independent regulator for online safety. Hector's World immerses students in the following topics:
- Personal information - Cyberbullying - Asking for help from an adult when we are unsure - Being safe online. Here is a photo of some students helping Hector and his friends! This week, students in Carome Learning Community have been exploring the magic of reading by listening to the audiobook How to Train Your Dragon, written and illustrated by Cressida Cowell. This selection aligns with this year's CBCA Children's Book Week theme, Reading is Magic. The students have been inspired by the enchanting winged wonders in the story. The 2024 NAIDOC Week theme is “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud”. In honour of the Elders and senior Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have blazed the way, CLC students read short biographies of Patty Mills, Dr Alice (Alitya) Rigney, Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue, Yunupingu and Eddie Koiki Mabo. While reading through their stories, CLC students reflected on discussion questions to guide conversations about how each individual kept their own fire burning within themselves and their community, and how they advocated for change across the country in various areas. On Friday 21st June, students were invited to come to school with crazy hair for a gold coin donation. Our students came to school with creative, curled, twisted, coloured, teased and crimped HAIR! View the photos below to see our sensational styles! Introducing our three female Spiny Leaf Insects in CLC. Their names are Flora, Laura and Bethany! CLC students are doing so well in caring for them by spraying them with water and changing the sugar gum leaves in their enclosure. We love our new pets! A teacher from St. Monica's College in Epping visited CLC to share some of his school's special pets! We learnt about turtles, frogs and different types of lizards. It was exciting to see these amazing creatures. Ben has kindly given CLC three Spiny Leaf Insects to care for and have in our Learning Community. Thank you Ben!
The CLC students participated in the Life saving education program at Sandridge Beach in Port Melbourne. Students gained knowledge of keeping safe when in and around water at the beach. Students were taught practical strategies like identifying rip currents and reading key safety signs. Students learnt about emergency response sequences, including DRABCD and doing CPR to the beat of 'Baby Shark'. Students had a great day being at the beach with their friends, while being challenged with new activities and experiences regarding water safety. Well done CLC! In today's Raspberry Pi Session, students tested the different levels in water. We used a freshwater testing kit to test the PH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels in tap water. Students then used Python coding to extract the data collected from the experiment. As always, there was a strong emphasis on safety when conducting the experiment and good hygiene practice of washing hands afterwards. Students were highly engaged in today's session. |
